Moving Signs From Full Floor Plans to Construction Drawings

Construction plans are often subsets of a larger plan that may not be updated until well after the project concludes. This article will explain how to make those two sets of plans work together.

Location Terminology

Original Full Plan - The complete floorplan available at the beginning of the project

Sub Plan - The updated version of the full plan that is the subsection being updated.

New Full Plan - The complete floorplan that merges the updates from the Sub Plan into the greater whole.

1. Set Up the New Sub Plan

  1. Rename Original Full Plan - To help disinguish the original plan frum the subsection/s, name it something like "Floor 1 - Main".
  2. Upload the Sub-Plan: Upload the sub plan as a brand new floor plan. It should be named a combination of the Original Full Plan and the Project name (i.e. Floor 1 - Office Renovation)
  3. Verify Scale and Orientation: Ensure the scale of both plans is accurate and the cardinal directions match (i.e. North is up on both plans)

2. Isolate the Impacted Area

  • Create a Zone: On the original full floor plan, draw a zone around the affected project area. Name this zone after the project. It will provide a visual warning that signs in the zone are located elsewhere and the main floor plan may temporarily be inaccurate.

3. Migrate Signs to the Project Plan

  1. Select all relevant signs within the newly created zone and create a new revision for them.

  2. Assign these revisions to your active design project.

  3. Transfer these revisions to the Sub-Plan

  4. Adjust Sign Placement to account for differences in plan sizing. Group-select the signs on the new sub-plan and drag them into place to align their markers correctly.

Once the project is complete and the signs have been installed, but before merging the signs back to a manage project, complete the next steps.

4. Re-Integration

  1. Apply Job Numbers: Once the project is complete, follow  standard closeout process by referencing the job number on the signs.

  2. **Update the Main Floor Plan: Upload the New Full Plan to supersede the Original Full Plan.

  3. Return Signs to the Main Plan: Move the signs from the Sub-plan back to the updated main floor plan and adjust the sign markers into their final positions

  4. Merge:  Merge all signs back to a managed project to complete their journey
  5. Clean Up: Delete the temporary Sub Plan, the design project, and the relevant zone.

** If the updated full floor plan is not yet available, move the completed signs to a "Manage Awaiting Location Plans" prject until the plan becomes available and they can be merged to Manage.
